CAN I SET A SPECIFIC PICK UP-DATE OR PLACE A SPECIAL ORDER FOR FRESH UNI AHEAD OF TIME?

No. Unfortunately, uni harvesting is influenced by bad weather and scarcity. Our website tracks live inventory and we only pack to order. Once the uni is out of stock on our website, we are sold out until the next weekly batch. Check out our website often since we typically update inventory on Sundays.

DO YOU OFFER SAME DAY PICK UPS?

Yes, if your order is placed before our 6am PST cut off time. During the major holidays, please call us for our hours.

We pack our products with insulation and ice packs to last a few days in case of an unexpected delay in transit. There may be unusual circumstances, such as severe weather, which are out of our control.

We can't guarantee a delivery time for any order. Deliveries may be as late as 8-9pm in some rural areas, especially during holidays.

WHEN DO YOU RESTOCK FRESH UNI?

We typically update our fresh uni inventory on Sundays.

We supply many restaurants, smaller uni distributors, and chefs. Uni harvesting is influenced by bad weather, and we may experience a uni shortage due to high demand. We have meticulous standards for quality - 1000lb of sea urchin will only yield about 5 wooden trays of Premium Uni.

Please check back weekly to order when we have fresh uni. Alternatively, you can always purchase our popular frozen Uni Shutou.

what's the difference between fresh uni & uni shutou

Both products start with high-quality fresh sea urchin (uni) from Santa Barbara.

Uni translates to sea urchin in Japanese. Though typically called sea urchin roe, uni is actually the gonad that produces roe. There are five long strips of uni within the sea urchin. Uni normally has an orange or yellow color and there are many types of species.

Fresh Uni is cracked, packed, and shipped to order. Ships at a refrigerated temperature (not frozen) and must be consumed quickly.

Uni Shutou uses fresh uni and is marinated in a kelp-based soy sauce. Shutou is a delicious frozen uni product with a long shelf life.

what type of sea urchin do you use?

We use wild red sea urchin from Santa Barbara, California, also known as Aka-Uni in Japanese. Red sea urchins in North America are large in size and sweeter, relative to the Japanese Bafun Uni. Fresh red sea urchin (uni) typically turns non-uni lovers into enthusiasts.

how long is the guaranteed date?

Fresh uni is best by 1 week from the ship date (if kept refrigerated).

Frozen products should be consumed within 1 week if transferred to the refrigerator. Uni Shutou lasts about 3 months if kept frozen.

Please follow food-safe handling when storing, preparing, and consuming our products.

Can I keep fresh uni in the freezer?

No. Once fresh uni is frozen and thawed, the flesh may become mushy.

where does maruhide get their products from?

We make almost all of our own products since we are a direct factory processor. Other products will be sourced by our in-house masters who scour the world for the best ingredients.

Return Policy

What's your return policy?

If you’re dissatisfied with a fresh seafood item, please e-mail us within 48 hours of delivery. Please include a detailed description of the problem, photos, and videos, if possible. Be advised that our offices are closed on weekends. We will respond to customer service inquiries Monday through Friday, by the next available business day.

Although we ship priority to arrive the next day, weather events or transit delays may be out of our control. For this reason, we send our fresh and frozen products in insulated packaging with gel ice to withstand 24-48 hours in transit (depending on the final destination).

If products purchased frozen arrive cold to the touch or slightly thawed, sealed portions may be safely refrozen and consumed with no noticeable loss of quality or nutritional value. Please place order immediately into refrigeration. Usually, the back of the refrigerator is ideal.

FedEx, UPS, and Maruhide Marine Products, Inc. assume no liability for loss, damage, delay, misdelivery, or non-delivery due to causes beyond either party’s reasonable control (aka “Acts of God”).

What should I do if my package is delayed?

In the rare case of a delay outside of our control, please reach out to us immediately.

Can I Get MY PICK UP ORDER REFUNDED?

Unfortunately, all sales are final on our pick up orders. We pack each order for you and our team works hard to make sure each order is packed correctly. We crack fresh uni to order and don't take returns to make sure the uni is fresh for all of our customers.
